Economist Democracy Index 2024. Eiu’s democracy index report analyses the relationship between democracy, war and peace and looks at the geopolitical drivers of conflict. The latest edition finds that almost half (45.3%) of the world’s population live in a democracy of some sort, while more than a third (36.9%) live under authoritarian rule (see map).

The index uses certain indicators to decipher the democracy score for each country, including electoral process and pluralism, whether they have a functioning government, political. The economist democracy index rates countries on the state of their governing system each year.
